Hearts and Minds: Maintaining Good Physical and Emotional Health in the Modern World
In today’s world, we are having more health advice thrown at us than ever before. Trying to keep up with all the different advice, which at times can even seem contradictory, isn’t easy. We all want to stay healthy, but when there is so much confusion over how to actually achieve that, things become difficult.
If you are looking to reach your peak physical condition, you will need an intensive and well thought out fitness plan. But for those of us who just want to keep ourselves in better shape, there are a number of simple things that we can all do.
Check Your Diet
Our diets play a huge role in determining our overall health. The food that we eat will provide our body with the building blocks it needs in order to grow and develop. Think of your body as being like a complex architectural structure. Just as many different materials, brick, glass, metal, are required to build a building, our bodies require a diverse range of materials in order to stay healthy.
By maintaining a varied and balanced diet, you will ensure that your body has access to all the biological building blocks it needs. This is important for both emotional and physical health. Physically, our bodies must be able to replenish the resources that they use. But our emotions are also determined by the presence of certain neurotransmitters. If we don’t have the necessary building blocks for those (known as amino acids) then we will be unable to regulate our moods properly.
Don’t Ignore Your Emotions
Our society still has a broadly negative view of mental health patients. Attitudes have clearly improved hugely in recent times, and we should never overlook this progress. However, many people in our culture who feel that they need mental health treatment are dissuaded from seeking it because of the deeply ingrained prejudices of society.
If you feel that your emotional health is suffering in any way, you should not hesitate to consult with a mental health professional.
Check Your Sexual Health
There is a much greater awareness surrounding sexual health today than there has been in the past. If you are sexually active, and especially if you have multiple sexual partners, it is a good idea to regularly visit a medical clinic that offers STD testing. You can’t be too careful when it comes to your sexual health, especially considering that many sexually transmitted infections can have serious long-term consequences.
Getting enough exercise is an absolutely vital component of a well-rounded fitness regimen. The recommended amount of exercise that any of us take is up for debate; this is one area where advice changes constantly. But most experts agree that, short of some serious over exertion, there is no such thing as too much exercise. You should set aside as much time as you possibly can for physical exercise, but most experts recommend around 20 minutes of intense exercise each week at a minimum.
Staying in shape isn’t exactly easy, but it isn’t anywhere near as hard as many people think. As long as you are sensible and strike a balance between diet and exercise, you should have no trouble keeping yourself in shape. When problems do arise, make sure that you address them immediately.
